Self-Forgiveness Is Not Letting Yourself Off the Hook

Forgiving yourself doesn't mean pretending it didn't happen, or deciding it was fine. It means stopping the punishment loop while keeping the lesson. You can fully acknowledge what you did, feel the weight of it, take responsibility — and still choose not to torture yourself indefinitely over it. Punishing your past self does nothing for the people you may have hurt, and it does nothing for your future self either. The energy spent in shame and self-flagellation could go toward actually doing better. Accountability and self-compassion are not opposites — they work together.
The point
Self-forgiveness means ending the punishment loop without erasing the lesson — accountability and self-compassion can coexist.
