You Can Outgrow an Old Self Without Hating It

H howtolive.guide ·

The person you were at 20 made the best decisions they could with what they had at the time. Cringing at old photos, old journals, old choices — it feels like self-awareness, but it's often just contempt in disguise. You don't have to hate who you were in order to validate how far you've come. "I was doing my best with limited tools" is a more honest frame than "I was an idiot." The growth is real either way. But one framing leaves you with compassion for yourself and the people around you who are still in an earlier chapter — and that compassion is worth keeping.

The point
You can grow beyond an old version of yourself with curiosity and compassion rather than contempt.
