How to Self-Rescue If You Fall Through Ice

H howtolive.guide ·

Don't panic — you have 1-3 minutes before cold shock subsides and your muscles still work. Turn toward the direction you came from, because that ice already held your weight. Extend your arms onto the ice surface and kick your legs to get your body horizontal, then pull yourself forward using your arms and elbows, spreading your weight as wide as possible. Once you're on the ice, don't stand up — roll away from the hole until you reach solid ground. Every second counts, but calm, deliberate movements save you where thrashing won't.

The point
Turn back the way you came, kick to horizontal, pull yourself onto the ice, then roll away — never stand up near the hole.
