What to Do If Your Brakes Fail While Driving

Don't panic — you still have options. Pump the brake pedal rapidly several times; this can rebuild pressure in the braking system and may restore partial braking. Downshift to lower gears progressively to use engine braking. Apply the parking brake gently and gradually — yanking it will lock the rear wheels and spin you. Look for an uphill slope or a soft surface like grass or gravel to bleed off speed. If you have cruise control on, turn it off immediately. Warn other drivers by flashing your lights and using your horn.
The point
If brakes fail: pump the pedal, downshift gears, apply the parking brake gently, and aim for an uphill slope.
