What to Do During a Flood

Move to higher ground immediately — don't wait for official orders if water is rising fast. Never walk or drive through floodwater: just 6 inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and 2 feet can carry away a car. If water is entering your home, turn off electricity at the main breaker before it reaches outlets or appliances. Avoid basements entirely during flooding — they become death traps. Floodwater is deceptively powerful and often contaminated, so treat it as more dangerous than it looks.
The point
Move to higher ground immediately and never walk or drive through floodwater — it's far more powerful than it looks.
