What to Do During a Tornado Warning

When a tornado warning sounds, go immediately to the lowest interior room without windows — a basement, bathroom, or closet. Get under sturdy furniture if possible, and cover yourself with a mattress or thick blankets to protect against flying debris. If you're in a car, do not try to outrun a tornado — get out and lie flat in the nearest ditch, covering your head with your hands. Tornadoes are unpredictable and can change direction in seconds, so sheltering in place is almost always safer than fleeing. The key is putting as many walls as possible between you and the outside.
