What to Do If Food Tastes Flat Even After Seasoning

H howtolive.guide ·

You've added salt, tasted, added more salt — and it still tastes like nothing. The problem isn't salt. The answer is almost always acid.

Squeeze some lemon juice, add a splash of vinegar, or stir in a spoonful of yogurt. Acid brightens flavors the way turning up the contrast on a photo makes colors pop. If acid alone doesn't fix it, try more fat — a knob of butter or drizzle of olive oil adds richness and carries flavor to your palate. Still flat? Reach for umami: soy sauce, parmesan, tomato paste, fish sauce, or miso. These add a deep savory dimension that salt alone cannot provide.

The point
When food tastes flat despite salt, add acid (lemon, vinegar), then try fat (butter, oil), then umami (soy sauce, parmesan).
