Baking Soda and Vinegar Neutralize Each Other When Mixed
Short answer: mixed together in a bowl, they cancel each other out. The dramatic fizz is carbon dioxide escaping, and what it leaves behind is mostly water with a little sodium acetate dissolved in it — salt water, essentially. It cleans no better than what comes out of your tap, and you have spent two genuinely useful products to make it.
The chemistry, in one line
Baking soda is a base (sodium bicarbonate). Vinegar is an acid (dilute acetic acid). Put them together and they neutralise each other, giving off carbon dioxide and leaving water plus sodium acetate. The foam is the reaction finishing, not the reaction working. By the time the bubbling dies down, neither the alkali nor the acid is still around to do the job you bought it for.
This matters because the two clean by opposite mechanisms:
- Vinegar works because it is acidic — it dissolves limescale, hard-water spots, soap scum and mineral deposits.
- Baking soda works because it is a mild alkaline abrasive — it cuts grease and scours without scratching.
Combine them and you destroy both properties at once. It is the cleaning equivalent of mixing hot and cold water and expecting the result to be more useful than either.
The one case where the fizz does something
A sluggish drain. Here the point is mechanical rather than chemical: gas evolving inside a confined pipe agitates the residue and can shift a light film. Even then the effect is weak, and it does nothing about the grease and hair that cause most real blockages — those need hot water, a plunger, or physically pulling the clog out. If the drain is properly blocked, the fizz is a delaying tactic. And whatever you do, coffee grounds will make it worse, not better.

The single biggest improvement to either product is dwell time. Most people spray and wipe immediately, which is close to the least effective thing you can do — let cleaning products sit before you scrub and you halve the work.
What you must never mix
The baking-soda-and-vinegar myth is harmless: it wastes product, nothing more. Other combinations are genuinely dangerous, and the difference is worth knowing — never mix bleach with ammonia or vinegar. Bleach plus acid releases chlorine gas. That is not a cleaning myth, that is an ambulance.
One more limit on vinegar: keep it off natural stone (marble, granite, travertine) and unsealed grout. The acid etches them. Those surfaces want a pH-neutral cleaner instead.
Frequent questions
So the videos are fake? The reaction is real and the volcano is real. What is not real is the claim that the leftover liquid cleans better than either ingredient. It is a school chemistry demonstration that got reclassified as a life hack.
What about using both in the laundry? Same problem. Added to the same cycle they neutralise each other. Vinegar in the rinse compartment as a softener is fine. Baking soda in the drum alongside detergent is fine. Both at once is pointless.
Can I use them one after the other? Yes — this is the sensible version. Scrub with baking soda paste, rinse, then attack the mineral deposits with vinegar. Sequential, not simultaneous.
Is one of them enough on its own? For most of a house, yes, plus dish soap. Vinegar, baking soda, dish soap and a few cloths cover the overwhelming majority of jobs — see the basic cleaning supplies you actually need. For a lot of surfaces microfibre and plain water do the job with no chemistry at all.
Does the fizz at least disinfect? No. Neither product is a registered disinfectant, mixed or separate. Vinegar has mild antibacterial activity, far below what a disinfectant claim actually requires.
