Wash Shower Curtains Before Replacing Them

That pink or black buildup on your shower curtain is mold and soap scum, not a sign the curtain is done. Toss it in the washing machine with a couple of towels and a cup of vinegar — the towels provide scrubbing action, the vinegar kills mold. Most curtains come out looking almost new. Only replace when the material itself is deteriorating — tearing, cracking, or losing its water resistance.
The point
Most discolored shower curtains can be machine-washed with vinegar instead of thrown away.
