What Laundry Symbols Actually Mean — A Quick Guide

H howtolive.guide ·

Those tiny icons on clothing tags are not decoration — they are the instructions that keep your clothes from shrinking, fading, or falling apart. The basics are simpler than you think. A tub icon is for washing: dots inside show temperature (one dot = cold, two = warm, three = hot). A triangle is for bleaching: empty means any bleach is fine, crossed out means none. A square with a circle inside is for tumble drying, and dots inside show heat level.

The iron icon works the same way — more dots, more heat. A circle means dry clean only. When in doubt, wash cold, skip the dryer, and hang to dry. This one rule saves more clothes than memorizing every symbol ever could.

The point
Learn five basic laundry symbols and when in doubt — wash cold and air dry. It saves more clothes than any other rule.

Shrank a 0 merino wool sweater on my second week of living alone. The label had a hand-wash symbol I'd never seen before. Printed out a laundry symbol cheat sheet and taped it inside the laundry cabinet door — still there seven years later.
