What to Do When Your Muscles Are Sore After a Workout
Soreness that shows up a day or two after exercise is normal — it means your muscles are adapting, not breaking. Gentle movement, light stretching, and staying hydrated usually help more than complete rest.
Keep moving lightly, but skip intense training on the same muscles until the soreness fades, usually within two to three days. If pain is sharp, localized, or gets worse instead of better, that is a different signal — stop and pay attention, it may be an actual injury, not soreness.
The point
Normal post-workout soreness responds better to gentle movement than to complete rest — but sharp pain is a different signal.
