Work-Life Boundaries Are Not a Luxury — They Are Infrastructure

H howtolive.guide ·

Boundaries are not about working less or caring less. They're about making sure your work gets the best version of you, not the exhausted, resentful version that shows up when there's no separation between your job and the rest of your life. A boundary is not a wall -- it's a door that opens and closes at times you decide.

Start small. Turn off email notifications after a certain hour. Don't check Slack on Saturday. Have one evening a week that is completely yours, no exceptions. The discomfort you feel when setting boundaries is not a sign you're doing it wrong -- it's the feeling of a muscle that hasn't been used.

The point
Setting clear boundaries between work and life is not selfish -- it is what makes both your work and your life sustainable.

My rule since 2022: Slack gets closed at 6 PM and I don't reopen it until 9 AM. My manager panicked for about two weeks, then stopped messaging me after hours entirely — because he knew there was no point. The boundary trained him, not just me.

The training-the-other-person effect is real. Once people learn you genuinely won't respond, the "urgent" messages stop being urgent.
