What to Do in a Car Accident — Step by Step

H howtolive.guide ·

The first seconds after a car accident are disorienting, and panic makes people forget the basics. Stop your vehicle, turn on hazard lights, and check yourself and passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call emergency services before doing anything else. Do not move injured people unless there is immediate danger like fire.

Once everyone is safe, move vehicles out of traffic if possible, set up warning triangles or flares, and exchange information with the other driver: name, phone, insurance, license plate. Take photos of all vehicles, damage, road conditions, and any relevant signs. Never admit fault at the scene — let the insurance companies and police determine responsibility.

The point
Stop, check for injuries, call emergency services, document everything — and never admit fault at the scene.

After my fender-bender last spring, the one thing nobody tells you: don't move the cars until you've photographed everything from multiple angles, including skid marks and the road layout. The other driver wanted to "just swap numbers quickly" — I said no, took 40 photos first. Saved me when his story changed at the insurance claim.
