Notice Patterns, Not Promises

Words are easy. Apologies cost nothing. Plans for the future are free to make. What actually tells you who someone is -- is what they do repeatedly, especially when it costs them something. If someone promises to change but the behavior stays the same, you're not getting unlucky; you're getting information. Believe the pattern. A person's actions over time are a far more honest narrator than any single conversation.
The point
Look at what someone consistently does, especially when it costs them something -- patterns are more honest than promises.
