Attacking the Person Instead of Discussing the Action

"You're so lazy" versus "The dishes haven't been done." One attacks identity; the other addresses behavior. The first triggers shame and a defensive wall; the second invites change. When you label a person instead of naming an action, they stop hearing the valid point underneath and start protecting their sense of self. Address what happened, not who they are.
The point
Attacking someone's character shuts down conversation; addressing specific behavior opens the door to change.
