You Are Not Your Thoughts

Your mind produces thoughts the way a river produces currents — constantly, automatically, and not always in the direction you'd choose. Having a dark thought doesn't make you a dark person. Having an anxious thought doesn't mean danger is real.

You are the one who notices the thoughts, not the thoughts themselves. That small distance between you and what your mind generates is where your freedom lives. You don't have to believe everything you think, and you certainly don't have to act on it.

Thoughts come and go on their own — you are the observer, not the content.

This was the single biggest realization from meditation for me. Thoughts are like clouds — they pass through, but you're the sky. Took me about 3 months of daily practice to really feel this, not just understand it intellectually.

What kind of meditation did you start with? I've been trying but can't seem to get past the "this is pointless" phase.

I had the same experience. Started with just 5 minutes of Headspace and gradually worked up to 20 minutes.
