What to Do When Someone You Love Is Depressed

H howtolive.guide ·

When someone you love is depressed, the instinct to fix it is strong — but most fix-it attempts backfire. "Just exercise," "think positive," "count your blessings" land like accusations. They imply that the person could feel better if they just tried harder. Depression is not a choice, and it doesn't respond to cheerleading.

What actually helps: show up consistently, without expectations or a script. Say "I'm here — no pressure." Help with small practical things like food or errands. Ask "do you want advice, or do you just want someone to listen?" before offering anything. And take care of yourself too — supporting someone through depression is draining, and you're no help to them if you're running on empty.

The point
When someone you love is depressed, consistent quiet presence helps more than advice — and don't forget to take care of yourself too.
