Managing other people's feelings, staying calm when everything is tense, being the person who holds it together — none of this shows up in a task list, but it consumes real energy. If you feel exhausted without having "done anything," you probably did a great deal. Emotional labor is invisible precisely because it looks like not working. Name it. Count it. Stop treating it as free.
