Don't Store Potatoes and Onions Together — They Spoil Each Other

H howtolive.guide ·

Onions release ethylene gas, which triggers potatoes to sprout faster. Meanwhile, the moisture from potatoes accelerates onion rot. Together, they create a feedback loop that shortens the shelf life of both.

Store them separately in cool, dark, well-ventilated spaces. A pantry, a cupboard, or even separate paper bags work well. Keep potatoes away from direct light (it turns them green and produces solanine, which is mildly toxic). Garlic, on the other hand, stores well alongside onions.

The point
Onions make potatoes sprout and potatoes make onions rot — always store them in separate cool, dark spots.
