What to Do If Your Flight Is Canceled and You Want Compensation
A canceled flight is frustrating, but knowing your rights turns frustration into a clear action plan. First, know which rules apply to your situation: EU Regulation 261 covers flights departing from or arriving in the EU on EU carriers and can entitle you to up to 600 euros. US DOT rules require airlines to refund your ticket but do not mandate additional compensation for cancellations. Other jurisdictions have their own frameworks.
At the airport, the airline must offer you a rebooking or a full refund — do not accept a voucher unless you genuinely prefer it. Document everything: the cancellation notice, any alternative flight offers, your expenses for meals and accommodation. File your compensation claim in writing within the applicable deadline. If the airline rejects it, a claims service or small claims court can help. Airlines count on most passengers not pursuing their rights — be the one who does.
