What to Do If a Debt Collector Calls You About Someone Else's Debt
Getting a call from a debt collector about a debt that is not yours can be intimidating, but remember: you are not responsible for someone else's debt. Do not acknowledge the debt, do not make any payments — even a small "goodwill" payment — and do not share your personal financial information. Ask the collector for the debt details in writing, including the creditor's name, the amount, and the debtor's identity.
Once you receive the written notice, send a formal dispute letter stating clearly that the debt is not yours. Send it via a method that provides proof of delivery. If the calls continue after your written dispute, they may be violating debt collection laws. Document every call — date, time, what was said — and report them to your consumer protection agency.
