Never Mix Bleach With Ammonia or Acidic Cleaners
Chlorine bleach is diluted with water and nothing else. With acids — vinegar, most toilet-bowl cleaners, limescale and rust removers — it releases chlorine gas; with ammonia — glass cleaners, or urine in an unflushed toilet or a litter box — chloramine gases. The usual accident is not a bucket cocktail but two products used one after another in the same toilet, sink or drain: use one product at a time and rinse or flush in between.
If products have mixed, leave the room first and take children and pets with you; open windows only if that does not slow you down. Trouble breathing, wheezing, chest pain or confusion is an emergency: 911 in the US, 999 in the UK, 112 in the EU. Any other symptoms — cough, stinging eyes, nausea — get advice now: Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) in the US; in the UK the NHS says 999 if you think someone breathed in something harmful, 111 if you are not sure. Symptoms can start hours later; if they do, call at once.
