Don't Put Anything in a Seizing Person's Mouth

This myth has been around for generations, but it is physically impossible to swallow your own tongue. The tongue is anchored to the floor of the mouth. Putting objects — a wallet, a spoon, your fingers — in a seizing person's mouth risks breaking their teeth, dislocating their jaw, or creating a choking hazard. You may also get bitten badly. The most helpful thing you can do is protect their head, clear the area, and wait. Once the seizure ends, roll them onto their side so saliva can drain and their airway stays clear.
The point
You cannot swallow your tongue — putting objects in a seizing person's mouth only causes injury.
