If Your Car Breaks Down on a Highway, Exit on the Passenger Side

H howtolive.guide ·

Highway traffic moves fast and closer to the shoulder than you think. More people are killed by passing vehicles while standing beside their broken-down car than in the breakdown itself. When you pull over, put on your hazard lights, then exit through the passenger-side door, away from traffic. Move well behind the vehicle and as far from the road as possible — ideally behind the guardrail. Never stand between your car and oncoming traffic, not even "just for a minute" to check under the hood.

The point
Always exit a broken-down car on the passenger side — standing next to highway traffic kills more people than the breakdowns.
