Putting Off Hard Family Conversations Until a Crisis Forces Them
Questions like who will care for an aging parent or how to split an inheritance feel too uncomfortable to raise while everyone is healthy and getting along. So families wait, and the conversation ends up happening in a hospital hallway or right after a funeral, when emotions run highest and clear thinking is hardest.
Having it early needs no crisis as an excuse -- bring it up during an ordinary visit, framed as planning rather than emergency. A slightly awkward conversation now is far cheaper than one forced by a hospital bed.
The point
Difficult family decisions are easier discussed early and calmly than forced out by a crisis later.
