Negotiating Your First Raise Is Scary — Do It Anyway

H howtolive.guide ·

Most people never ask for a raise. They wait, hoping someone will notice their work and reward them. That's not how it works. Your manager has a dozen things on their plate, and your compensation is not top of mind unless you put it there.

Before you walk in, build your case with specifics: results you delivered, responsibilities you took on, market data on what your role pays. Don't make it about fairness or feelings -- make it about value. Pick a calm moment, not the middle of a crisis. And know this: the worst they can say is "not right now," and even that gives you information about where you stand and what you need to do next.

The point
Asking for a raise feels uncomfortable, but staying silent guarantees you will be paid less than you are worth for longer than you should.

I prepared a document with every project I delivered, every positive feedback email, and market salary data. Walked into the meeting with facts, not feelings. Got 15% instead of the "standard" 3%. Preparation is everything.
