How to Accept a Compliment Without Deflecting or Dismissing It

H howtolive.guide ·

"Oh, this old thing?" "No, I was terrible." "It was nothing, really." Sound familiar? Most people deflect compliments out of discomfort, not modesty. But when someone offers you genuine praise and you bat it away, you're telling them their perception is wrong. That's not humility -- it's a subtle rejection of their kindness.

The fix is almost embarrassingly simple: say thank you and stop talking. You don't need to explain, qualify, or redirect. Just "thank you, that means a lot" and let the moment land. It will feel strange at first, like standing in a spotlight you didn't ask for. That's okay. You'll get used to it.

The point
When someone compliments you, say thank you and stop talking -- deflecting is not modesty, it is a rejection of their kindness.
