Data breaches happen constantly, and most people never find out their email and passwords have been exposed until something goes wrong. The site haveibeenpwned.com, run by security researcher Troy Hunt, lets you check for free whether your email address appeared in any known breaches.

Do it right now. If your email shows up — and it probably will — do not panic, but take action. Change the password on any breached service. If you reused that password anywhere else, change it there too. Then set up a notification alert so you know the moment your address appears in a future breach. Knowledge is the first step to control.
