Shame Doesn't Motivate Change, It Blocks It

H Pavel Volkov · howtolive.guide ·

There's a common belief that if you feel bad enough about a flaw, you'll finally fix it — so people pile on the self-attack hoping it'll spark change. It does the opposite.

Shame makes people hide, defend, or freeze — none of which leads to growth, while guilt and honest disappointment actually leave room to act. If you want to change a behavior, drop the self-hatred and keep only the part of the feeling that points at what to do differently.

The point
Piling shame on yourself doesn't spark change — it makes you hide or freeze. Keep the useful part of the feeling and drop the self-attack.
