The Jump from Individual Contributor to Manager Is a Career Change, Not a Promotion

Being a great engineer, designer, or analyst doesn't automatically make you a great manager. Management is a different craft — it requires letting go of the work that made you successful and learning to succeed through other people's output. The skills are different, the satisfaction is different, and the daily rhythm is completely different.
Before you say yes, ask yourself honestly: do you want to manage, or do you just want the title and the raise? Those are very different motivations with very different outcomes.
The point
Management requires an entirely different skill set — treat it as a new career, not just the next rung on the ladder.
