How to Check a Contract Before Signing — Even If You Are Not a Lawyer

You do not need a law degree to protect yourself. Before signing any contract, read it completely — not just the first page. Look for automatic renewal clauses, penalties for early termination, liability limitations, and anything that says "at the sole discretion of" the other party. If a clause confuses you, that is exactly the clause that needs clarifying.
Never sign under time pressure. If someone says "sign now or the deal expires," that is a negotiation tactic, not a deadline. Take the document home, sleep on it, and ask questions. A good deal does not evaporate because you took twenty-four hours to read the fine print.
The point
Read the whole contract, watch for auto-renewal and penalty clauses, never sign under pressure, and always ask about anything unclear.

Rule of thumb: if the contract is longer than 5 pages and they pressure you to sign "today" — walk away. Legitimate businesses give you time to read. The pressure is always a red flag.
