Your Identity Shouldn't Be Attached to Your Beliefs

When a belief becomes part of "who you are," any challenge to it feels like a personal attack. You stop evaluating the idea on its merits and start defending it as if your self-worth depends on it — because in a way, it does. Hold your ideas at arm's length so you can examine them honestly. You are not your opinions. The more loosely you hold them, the more freely you can update them when better information arrives.
The point
Hold beliefs loosely — when ideas become identity, honest thinking becomes impossible.
