What to Do If Someone Is Drowning — Don't Jump In

Every year, untrained rescuers drown trying to save others. A drowning person is in full panic mode and will grab onto you and pull you under — even if they know you. Instead of jumping in, remember: Reach, Throw, Row. Reach with a pole, branch, or towel. Throw a life ring, cooler, or anything that floats. Row out in a boat if one is available. Only enter the water as an absolute last resort, and approach from behind to avoid being grabbed. Call emergency services immediately — professional rescuers have the training and equipment to do this safely.
The point
Don't jump in after a drowning person — reach, throw, or row. Untrained water rescues frequently result in two drownings instead of one.
