What to Do During a Fire in Your Building

H howtolive.guide ·

When a fire alarm goes off, most people hesitate — they check their phone, grab belongings, or wait to see what others do. Do not wait. Leave immediately. Close doors behind you (it slows the fire), stay low if there is smoke, and use the stairs, never the elevator. Feel closed doors with the back of your hand before opening — if it is hot, the fire is on the other side.

Once outside, move away from the building and call emergency services even if you think someone already did. Never go back inside for belongings. If you are trapped, seal the door gaps with wet towels, go to a window, and signal for help. Know your building's exit routes today — the time to learn them is not when the hallway is full of smoke.

The point
Leave immediately, close doors behind you, use stairs, and never go back for belongings — know the exit routes before you need them.

Fire drill at my office building — I was the only person on the 9th floor who actually touched the door before opening it. Everyone else just walked out. The trainer said that habit, checking for heat before opening, is the one that matters most in a real fire and the one almost nobody has. Took about three drills to make it automatic.
