Travel Safety Essentials — Before You Leave Home
Most travel problems are preventable with simple preparation. Scan or photograph your passport, ID, insurance card, and travel documents — store copies in your email and a cloud folder. Keep a physical copy separate from originals. Save your embassy's phone number and address for every country you visit.
Split your money: keep some cash, a card, and a backup card in separate locations (wallet, bag, hotel safe). Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics in unfamiliar areas. Register with your country's travel advisory service if available. Research common local scams before you arrive — they are almost always documented online. The goal is not to be paranoid but to be prepared, so you can focus on enjoying your trip instead of solving emergencies.

I email myself a PDF with every document — passport, visa, travel insurance policy number with the claims hotline, and the address of the nearest embassy. It's searchable from any device anywhere. The insurance hotline part saved me once when I needed emergency surgery in Vietnam: found the number in 30 seconds instead of panicking.
