Don't Hide Under an Overpass During a Tornado

H howtolive.guide ·

This is one of the most dangerous tornado myths. Overpasses act as wind tunnels, accelerating debris to lethal speeds right where you're sheltering. You're also elevated and more exposed than if you were at ground level. A study of tornado fatalities found that people under overpasses were significantly more likely to die than those in open terrain. If you're caught in a car, the safest option is to find a low ditch beside the road, lie flat face-down, and cover your head — not glamorous, but far more survivable.

The point
Overpasses funnel wind and debris to lethal speeds — a low ditch beside the road is significantly safer during a tornado.
