How to Handle Hydroplaning — Most Drivers React Wrong

H howtolive.guide ·

The moment you feel the steering go light and unresponsive, you are hydroplaning — your tires have lost contact with the road. Your instinct screams to brake, but slamming the brakes locks the wheels and you lose all directional control. Instead: gently take your foot off the gas, keep the steering wheel straight (or point it where you want to go), and wait for the tires to reconnect with the road surface. Don't make sudden steering corrections. The contact patch will return in a few seconds if you stay calm. This is one of those situations where doing less is doing more.

The point
When hydroplaning, lift off the gas gently, keep the wheel straight, and don't brake — your tires will reconnect in seconds.
