Never Run a Generator Indoors or Near Windows

Portable generators produce carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, invisible gas that kills. Every storm season, people die because they run generators in garages, basements, or right outside open windows. CO builds up fast — you can lose consciousness in minutes without ever smelling anything. Place your generator at least 20 feet (6 meters) from any door, window, or vent, with the exhaust pointing away from the house. Install CO detectors on every floor of your home, especially near sleeping areas. If a CO alarm goes off, get everyone outside immediately and call emergency services.
The point
Generator exhaust is invisible and deadly — always run it at least 20 feet from any opening and install CO detectors.
