Disappointing Others Is Often the Price of Protecting Yourself

When you set a boundary, someone doesn't get what they wanted from you. That's not cruelty — that's the natural cost of having limits. Guilt after saying no doesn't mean you made a mistake. It means you're not yet accustomed to putting your own needs on the table. The discomfort is real, but it's temporary. The self-respect you build by holding the line stays with you much longer.
The point
Guilt after saying no is a sign you're not used to it — not a sign you were wrong.
