A small label or piece of colored tape on both ends of a cable saves you from the tangled mystery box under your desk. Do it on day one — not when you're desperately trying to figure out which one to unplug.
A label maker works best, but masking tape and a marker are perfectly fine. The key is doing it the moment the device comes out of the box, while you still know which cable belongs to what.
