Which Way Turns Off the Water — and Where to Find Your Main Shut-Off Valve

Short answer: clockwise closes, counter-clockwise opens — righty-tighty, lefty-loosey, judged while facing the handle. On a lever (ball) valve you do not even need the direction: handle in line with the pipe means water flows, handle across the pipe means it is off. A quarter turn does it.

When a pipe bursts or a toilet overflows, you have minutes, not time to search. Find the valve today, check that it actually turns, and show everyone in the household where it is.

Which valve you have

• Ball valve with a lever or butterfly handle. Inside is a ball with a hole through it, and the handle always points the way the hole points. In line with the pipe: open. Across the pipe: closed. A quarter turn, with no in-between position.
• Gate or globe valve with a round wheel handle. The handle position tells you nothing. Turn it clockwise until it stops with gentle resistance — usually several full turns. Common in older homes.
• Stopcock — the tap-like valve with a crutch or T handle found in many British and European homes, often under the kitchen sink. Clockwise to close.
• Curb stop or meter valve at the street. In most places it belongs to the water utility and needs a special key; leave it to them unless your inside valve fails.

How to tell whether it is open or closed

• Lever valve: parallel to the pipe — open; perpendicular — closed. A lever left at an angle is half-open, which wears the seal; take it all the way one way or the other.
• Wheel valve: try a gentle clockwise turn. If it moves, it was open.
• The real test: open a tap downstream. A closed valve gives a short trickle — the water still in the pipes — and then nothing. The dial on the water meter should stop as well.

Handles can slip on their spindle, so always confirm by the tap rather than by the handle alone.

Where to look

The main valve sits where the supply pipe enters the building: in a basement on the street-facing wall, in a utility room near the water heater or meter, under the kitchen sink, or in a garage or crawl space in warmer climates. In an apartment, look for a valve before the unit's own meter — behind a bathroom access panel, in a utility closet or a hallway cupboard. Valves on the riser that feeds the whole building belong to building management.

Then find the local ones: under each sink, behind the toilet, behind the washing machine and dishwasher, on the inlet of the water heater. They isolate one fixture and keep the rest of the home running.

When the valve will not move

Valves left open for years seize with scale.

• No cheater bar, no hammer. A snapped stem or cracked body turns a shut-off into a second leak.
• Rock the handle back and forth a few degrees; that often frees the ball or the gate.
• Still stuck: go one level up — the main valve instead of the local one, the utility's emergency line instead of the main.

Prevention takes a minute: close and reopen every valve twice a year. On a wheel valve, stop at gentle resistance — forcing the last turn crushes the washer and the valve starts to drip.

When water is pouring

1. Close the nearest valve that isolates the leak. If you cannot tell where it comes from, close the main.

3. Open a tap at the lowest point of the home to release the pressure.
4. Warn the neighbours below, call a plumber, and photograph the damage before you clean up; a home inventory makes the insurance claim much easier.
5. If the supply stays off for long and you drained the system, switch off the water heater: an element heating an empty tank burns out.
