Decluttering Made Easy — The Box Method

H howtolive.guide ·

If the idea of decluttering your entire home feels paralyzing, start with one box and one rule. Put anything you are unsure about into the box. Seal it, write today's date on it, and store it somewhere out of sight. If you do not open it to retrieve something within six months, donate or discard the entire box without looking inside.

This method works because it removes the emotional weight of decision-making. You are not throwing things away — you are testing whether you actually need them. Most people discover that they never once thought about the contents of the box after the first week. That tells you everything you need to know about how much those items actually mattered.

The point
Put uncertain items in a dated box — if you do not open it in six months, let the whole box go without looking inside.

The box method works: put uncertain items in a box, seal it, date it. If you don't open it in 3 months — donate it. I've done this 4 times. Never opened a single box.
