Most people don't know their dishwasher has a removable filter at the bottom that catches food particles. If your dishes come out gritty, smeared, or the machine smells, this is almost certainly why. Pull it out, rinse it under running water, scrub any stuck residue with an old toothbrush, and replace it. Do this once a month — it takes two minutes and makes a dramatic difference in cleaning performance.
