How to Verify a Contractor or Company Before You Pay Them

H howtolive.guide ·

Before handing money to any company or contractor, spend fifteen minutes verifying they are legitimate. Check if they have a registered business number, look for reviews from multiple sources — not just their own website — and ask for references from past clients. Be wary of companies that have no physical address, no online history, or only glowing five-star reviews with no substance.

For larger projects, ask for a written estimate, a clear timeline, and proof of insurance or licensing. Pay in stages tied to milestones, not everything upfront. A trustworthy contractor will not be offended by due diligence — they expect it. The ones who pressure you to "just trust them" are exactly the ones you should not.

The point
Check registration, read reviews from multiple sources, ask for references, and never pay everything upfront.
