How to Issue a Power of Attorney — and Why You Should Understand It

H howtolive.guide ·

A power of attorney is a document that lets someone else act on your behalf — sign papers, access accounts, or handle legal matters when you cannot be there. Before issuing one, understand exactly what authority you are granting and for how long. A general power of attorney gives broad control; a limited one restricts the scope to specific tasks. Always prefer the most limited version that covers your actual needs.

Make sure the person you choose is someone you trust completely — this is not a favor you hand out casually. Include an expiration date, specify what they can and cannot do, and have it notarized if your jurisdiction requires it. Keep a copy for yourself, and know that you can revoke it at any time if circumstances change.

The point
Grant only the minimum authority needed, set an expiration date, choose someone you deeply trust, and keep a copy for yourself.
