When to Walk Away from a Friendship

H howtolive.guide ·

Not every friendship is meant to last forever, and that's not a failure. Some friendships served their season and simply ran their course. Others turned harmful without either person noticing. The question is not have we been friends long enough to justify staying? The question is: does this friendship make both of us better?

Walking away doesn't have to be dramatic. Most friendships end not with a confrontation but with a quiet withdrawal -- fewer calls, less energy, a slow fade. If you've tried to address what's wrong and nothing changes, giving yourself permission to step back is not cruelty. It's self-preservation. And sometimes, it's the kindest thing for both of you.

The point
Not every friendship is forever -- if it consistently makes you worse, giving yourself permission to step back is not betrayal.
