The Mask You Wear for Others Eventually Becomes Your Face

H howtolive.guide ·

Everyone performs a version of themselves for the world. That's normal and sometimes necessary. But if you spend years pretending to be someone you're not — cheerful when you're burning out, agreeable when you're furious, confident when you're terrified — the performance eventually hardens into identity. You forget what was the mask and what was the face.

The risk isn't that people won't like the real you. The risk is that you won't recognize the real you anymore. Periodic honesty with yourself about who you actually are is not self-indulgence — it's maintenance.

The point
Performing a false self for too long doesn't just deceive others — it makes you lose sight of who you actually are.
