How to Read Nonfiction So You Actually Remember It

Most people read nonfiction like a novel — cover to cover, passively absorbing words. Then two weeks later they can't name a single key idea. The problem isn't your memory. It's your method. Nonfiction books aren't stories — they're reference material, and you should treat them that way.
Before reading, skim the table of contents and ask yourself what you want to learn. Read the introduction and conclusion first. Then dive into only the chapters that matter. While reading, pause after each chapter and write one sentence summarizing the main idea in your own words. If you can't do it, you either didn't understand or the chapter didn't say much. Both are useful to know.
The point
Don't read nonfiction cover to cover like a novel — skim, select, and summarize in your own words to actually retain the ideas.

Stopped reading non-fiction cover to cover. Now I read the table of contents, pick the 3 most relevant chapters, read those deeply, and take notes. Better retention, less time, more books.
