Do Not Wait Until the Last Month to Renew Your Passport or Apply for a Visa

Processing times are estimates, not guarantees. Government offices get backlogged, systems go down, and additional documentation requests can add weeks. If you need a passport or visa by a specific date, start the process months in advance — not weeks. Many countries require at least six months of passport validity for entry, which means your passport might be "expired" for travel purposes long before the actual expiration date.
Check processing times for your specific country and season, add a buffer, and apply accordingly. Expedited processing costs significantly more and is not always available. The cheapest and least stressful approach is always starting early.
The point
Processing times are unpredictable and many countries require 6+ months of passport validity. Start the process months before you need it.
