Carry a Whistle or Personal Alarm on Your Keychain
A personal safety alarm or a simple metal whistle draws attention fast and doesn't depend on your voice, which panic can take away. That also means it only helps where someone can hear it. A siren alarm is loud enough to harm hearing at close range: point it away from you, hold it at arm's length and never set it off next to your own ear or anyone else's — and teach children the same rule when you give them one. The arm's-length rule is for the alarm; a whistle is simply blown at your mouth. An alarm clips to your keys or bag and costs little; a whistle needs no battery. Test the alarm now and then, away from ears. The best safety tool is the one you always have on you.
